***Semi-retired real estate developer Richard Hadar has done a lot of good since he built his mini-New York City empire purchasing and partnering in some local trophy properties. In his heyday, Hadar acquired such important buildings as 1 E. 57th St., 50 W. 40th St. on Bryant Park and 770 Lexington Ave. He also converted Studio 54 into the popular Roundabout Theatre.
His eye for great property, though, may not be as good as his eye for great people. Hadar and wife Mica founded the Richard & Mica Hadar Foundation in 1993 to help gifted New York City students of the arts pay for college. After being selected by a committee, Hadar personally meets with each student.
“These are some of the most gifted high school students in the five boroughs,” says Hadar. “They have to lack financing to be selected. We pay the difference between their school loans and their total costs. We have a total of 53 scholars in colleges right now.”
In all, 225 scholars have received grants from the foundation. Hadar notes that each scholar selected is paired with a mentor from their field. Focusing primarily on performing, literary and visual arts, Hadar’s foundation has helped pianists like Jack Blaszkiewicz pay for studies at Montclair State University. Blaszkiewicz was mentored by accomplished opera singers such as Enid Benezra.
“Art is such an important part of New York City life,” says Hadar. “Our scholars contribute to that.” For more information, go to hadarfoundation.org.
