What is Hadar?

Artists have always been at the vanguard of positive change in society and no civilization has been able to survive without the vision and self identity articulated in its art. It is our belief that a student who demonstrates talent in any artistic field, and desires to attend college, but needs financial assistance, should be given that help. With this goal in mind, Richard & Mica Hadar Foundation, established in 1993 by Richard Hadar, supports young artists and scholars by providing academic scholarships, mentoring and career guidance.

Hadar scholars are nominated by high schools and arts and community organizations in New York City. Candidates must have been accepted into a college program, be in need of financial assistance, and demonstrate ability in either the performing, literary or the visual arts.

Since its inception, Richard & Mica Hadar Foundation has provided scholarships to over two hundred and forty students. Hadar scholars benefit from our mentoring program, which includes arts seminars and events. Our mentors are arts professionals who volunteer to help young artists in their chosen careers. Hadar scholars are also eligible for stipends to attend summer festivals and art programs throughout the world.

In summary, there is much more to Richard & Mica Hadar Foundation’s arts program than financial resources. We are committed to offering a support system that instills in young artists confidence and self-awareness, and helps them embark on their careers.

The Richard and Mica Hadar Foundation Celebrates 20 Years!

On December 30, 2013, the Hadar Foundation celebrated 20 years of the founding of the foundation with Hadar scholars, alumni, friends and family at the Merkin Hall in Manhattan.  Over 160 people listened to guest performances by talented musicians, an opera singer, two actors and a poet. Richard and Mica Hadar were presented with a yearbook created by over 65 of the Hadar Scholars and an award for inspiring hundreds of young artistic talents over the past two decades.  A special feature of the evening were two films by filmmaker Frank Cantor created to showcase the foundation’s work including testimonials by Geoffrey Canada, the founder of The Harlem Children’s Zone and Deborah Bial, the President and Founder of The Posse Foundation.
